On Thursday, 7th September 2023, we opened an exhibition titled “Cancer and Peace”. The exhibition emerged from a series of tactile-kinesthetic workshops held at the Typhlological Museum throughout 2023, involving members of the association “Everything for Her”. The workshops were created and led by Marina Bauer and Zrinka Šimičić Mihanović. The creators used the Museum’s permanent collection as a starting point for self-reflection. With additional artistic work, the creators motivated the participants to establish a synergistic relationship between touch, movement, and dance and visual expression.
Students of the Graduate Study of Museology and Heritage Management, under the guidance of PhD Žarka Vujić, full professor, actively contributed to the development of the exhibition. The museum displays artworks created during the workshops, as well as personal sentimental objects, and testimonies shared by the participants. This exhibition demonstrates that a museum can – and should – serve as a space for active and participatory relationship with the community. John F. Falk once said that visitors evaluate importance and relevance of a programme, and these words exactly can be used to describe the success of this one. The participants from the association “Everything for Her” expressed great satisfaction and enthusiasm for taking part in such a project, thereby confirming its value.
