Museums for Equality: Diversity and Inclusion

INTERNATIONAL MUSEUM DAY

The theme of this year's International Museum Day highlights museums as places of promoting equality, diversity, and inclusion. Although museums have been trying to emphasize their social role since the 1970s, for the last fifteen years the world museum community has been encouraging museum activities that fulfill a social task and stressing the need to include various groups in their programs.

This year's topic is an opportunity to recall that the Typhlological Museum has had a clearly defined social purpose since its beginnings, and the work has been focused on visually impaired people from the beginning. It is extremely important to point out that for the last two decades, the area of interest of the museum has been focused on the life and work of various sensitive social groups. All these programs - exhibitions, lectures, debates - pointed to the problems, rights, but also the achievements of various associations, same-sex communities, people with various forms of dementia, stroke victims, people who found a new home in Croatia. We have sought to influence prejudice, stereotypes, and a segregated approach to diversity.
On this day, when we celebrate Museum Day, we are reminded of some of our projects with a clear message that we will continue to do so in the future.
