World Guide Dog Day Celebration

24.4.2024.

On Wednesday 24 April, the Typhlological Museum hosted a special event to celebrate World Guide Dog Day. World Guide Dog Day is observed annually on the last Wednesday of April and this year, in collaboration with the Croatian Guide Dog and Mobility Association, workshops were held for third-grade students from the primary schools "Jure Kaštelan" and "Dr Ivan Merz".

The Croatian Guide Dog and Mobility Association supports blind individuals by enabling them to participate independently, safely, and actively in their communities with the assistance of guide dogs. The workshop, led by Kristina Šporčić Radović, addressed a number of topics related to guide dogs and blindness: the needs, rights, and options blind individuals have, communication and mobility of the blind, mobility with guide dogs, as well as the process of guide dog training.

The collaboration of the museum and the association aims at emphasising the significance of guide dogs, demonstrating facilitation of mobility with guide dogs, as well as encouraging interaction and new insights for primary school children.

This educational programme raises the awareness of the rights, opportunities, and needs of blind individuals, and of the role that dogs play in their lives.
