“NON-BAR-RIER-S” – Exhibition

21.5. - 3.9.2024.

Curator and exhibition designer: Igor Maroević, senior curator, the Typhlological Museum

As part of the “Tactile Gallery” series at the Typhlological Museum, an exhibition by the renowned academic painter and printmaker Anabel Zanze under the title of layered meanings – “NON-BAR-RIER-S” – is opened.

Anabel Zanze, a native of Dubrovnik now based in Zagreb, is known for her distinctive visual style. In her work, she combines typography with avant-garde movements like the Lettrism and Conceptual art. She graduated from the Graphic Arts Department of the Academy of Fine Arts in Zagreb in the class of Professor Ante Kuduz in 1996.

The exhibition features 15 works designed to be experienced by blind and partially sighted visitors with aim to transcend the boundaries between worlds, transforming barriers into NON-BAR-RIER-S. To achieve this, Zanze uses the typographic symbols of Braille letters and shapes them into an artistic form.

"Among contemporary Croatian artists, it is difficult to identify a more appropriate body of work than that of Anabel Zanze, which could be presented at the Typhlological Museum without the need for any modifications. Over the course of thirty years of creation and exhibiting at numerous museums and galleries, Zanze has been recognised by art professionals as one of the most unique painters currently active in the region.  Zanze has achieved significant visibility within the art world, yet her openness, empathy, and curiosity about new encounters and ideas have led her to explore a different kind of visibility with her paintings, to offer her paintings to the ones gifted with a different kind of visibility – the visibility of touch."
(from the exhibition catalogue text by Nada Beroš “Touching with Understanding”)

The exhibition is open from 21 May 2024 to 3 September 2024
