Invisible Portraits
18th May 2023 – 18th June 2023
On Thursday, 18th May 2023, the Typhlological Museum opened an exhibition of drawings by Krešimir Rajki titled “Invisible Portraits”.
Have you ever wondered how a person who is blind experiences the world around them? To what extent can visual art become perceivable and accessible to blind and partially sighted individuals? How much can descriptions of artworks help blind and partially sighted visitors to understand and experience art?
With his exhibition of drawings titled “Invisible Portraits”, Krešimir Rajki invites us – those who can see – to perceive and experience the world in a completely different way: the way a blind person does. The artist’s concept was inspired by his life with his blind father who provided first insights into the ways a blind person perceives visual art, images, and colour. Krešimir would describe in details artworks to his father and his father loved to hear them; nevertheless, he realised that he still was not able to convey the full richness of impressions and emotions he himself felt while observing the works. This realisation led to further reflection, ultimately resulting in the concept for “Invisible Portraits”. Through this project, the artist primarily addresses sighted individuals, aiming to bring them closer to the experience of visual impairment.
